1954  CHEVROLET 1422 3/4 TON

The Chevrolet Motor Car Co. was founded by William Durant in Detroit, Michigan, United States, in 1911. The company was set up to manufacture motor vehicles designed by the Swiss racing driver, Louis Chevrolet. In 1918 the company became the Chevrolet Motor Division of the General Motor Corporation. Commercial vehicle manufacture commenced at this time.

During the 1920's, thousands of light weight North American trucks were imported into Australia. These vehicles were a common sight on the roads until well after World War II.

From 1934, Chevrolet commercial vehicle chassis were imported into Australia and the bodies manufactured by the General Motors Holden's plant in Melbourne, Victoria. The 1953-1956 Chevrolet truck cabs were the same as those fitted to the D series Bedford vehicles.

The Corporation still manufactures a wide range of cars, trucks and buses in the United States.

This truck was purchased new in 1954 by Ron Redmond of the Spring Terrace/Forest Reefs area near Orange, N.S.W. One year later it was traded in for a larger truck at Cameron's Motors, Orange (Chevrolet and G.M.H. dealer) with less than 4000 miles on the speedo. It was then purchased by Paddy Doherty, an orchardist from Canobolas. In 1968 the truck was sold to John and Enid Cobb of Orange. They in turn sold it in 1975 to a Mr Brauwers. Eric Rothery was the next to buy the vehicle, while Mr Normie Beer was the last person to buy the truck in 1980. He used it right up until his death on 13 June, 1996 at the age of 67. The truck was last registered LBV-736

Mr Beer left instructions in his will that the truck was to be donated to a suitable Museum upon his death. A member living in Orange, learned of this situation and approached the Executor of the Estate with a view to having it made available to the Bus and Truck Museum. The approach was viewed favourably by the Executor and the vehicle was donated to the Association only a short time after Mr Beer had passed away.
