112 - 1947 Daimler CVG6

1947  DAIMLER  CVG6

This bus was one of 15 ordered by the Department of Road Transport and Tramways in 1944 for use in Sydney. On arrival in Sydney in 1946, the Department found that the chassis did not meet the specifications required and refused to accept delivery. The Metropolitan Transport Trust (M.T.T.) in Adelaide, South Australia, subsequently decided that the chassis did suit their requirements and purchased all 15. The Trust made arrangements with Commonwealth Engineering Co. Ltd of Granville, Sydney, to build  the double deck bodies. The body design adopted was very similar to those the Company was constructing for the Department in Sydney. The main difference being that the bodies only contained 54 seats while those built for Sydney contained 59.

The delivery of vehicles to Adelaide in those days was a major undertaking as the roads  compared to present day standards were very poor. The vehicle was registered 224.663, Fleet No. 112 and entered service in 1947 operating from Hackney depot. The livery being silver with red lining. The vehicle was withdrawn from M.T.T. service in 1960.

No 112 was then sold to a remote Cattle Station in the Coober Pedy area of Northern South Australia. A number of years later it was acquired for preservation by an Adelaide enthusiast. When the owner realised that he could not undertake the restoration, he offered it to the Association.

Several members journeyed to Adelaide in 1990 with the view to buying it for the Association if it was in satisfactory condition. The vehicle was found to be in quite a good state considering that it was 30 years since it had left the M.T.T. On the recommendation of these members, the Association decided to purchase the bus. Members then drove the vehicle the 1500 kilometres or so from Adelaide to Sydney. Remarkably this was without any incident whatsoever.
