1948 White WC 16
In the early years of manufacture of commercial vehicles in the United States, the suppliers product ranges were limited. Generally it was the custom to modify freight carrying vehicles so that bus bodies could be fitted. Importation of left hand drive truck chassis from the United States for both truck and bus use was common place for many years. The practice continued throughout World War II and finished about 1947. Most imported truck chassis from America were subsequently converted to right hand drive operation to comply with the registration laws in Australia. There were nevertheless exceptions, particularly in the military vehicles category.
This single deck bus began its career as a normal control or bonneted truck. Sydney bus proprietor, Arthur Marrin of Lakemba, Sydney, N.S.W., purchased the truck and had the chassis extended and a bus body fitted. The body is of timber frame construction and was built by Syd Wood Pty. Ltd. of Bankstown, Sydney, N.S.W. on 12 October 1951. The bus is equipped with 41 seats
The vehicle was registered as m/o 4070 in April 1952 for use on the Route 35, Belmore to Lakemba service. Eddy Hayman purchased the route in February 1963 and the bus came into his ownership. Two months later the vehicle was sold to a Mr Hayward, another bus proprietor. Katen & Heath bought the bus early in 1964 for their Fairfield area services. After an overhaul it was reregistered as m/o 4698 on 4 April 1964. In October 1973, the bus was sold to Mr. Currie of Glen Innes for the town service and reregistered MO 5923. In 1982 it was sold to Arandale. 4070 was withdrawn in March of that year and purchased for preservation.
Three members purchased the bus and a full restoration was completed in
March 1987.
