Australia Day 2024

Despite the blistering 30+ degree conditions, our Australia Day services for 2024 were a resounding success!

The Museum had 12 vintage double decker buses in operation, providing revelers with a short trip from the Sydney Opera House in Macquarie Street across the Harbour Bridge to North Sydney and return. Exhibits from Sydney, London and Hong Kong performed without fault, with regular water top ups to both the vehicles and the crews throughout the day.

This year a longer service was operated, commencing at 10.00am with the last bus departing just before 6.00pm. A total of 5,891 passengers were carried over 168 round trips - that's 173 more than 2023, and 18 more trips made!

The Museum gratefully took in just over $1,500 in both generous donations and in sales at the pop-up BusShop.

During the day while all the buses were away, some of our static exhibits were extracted and shifted to new locations in the Museum to make way for our newest restorations! See if you can spot the changes on your next visit.

While it was a long day for our volunteers, and they were all very glad to be out of the buses and at the dinner table by the very end, we look forward to providing this staple of the CBD's Australia Day celebrations again in 2025!

We hope you enjoy some of the photographs taken below by our Volunteers and Members.
